JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the body of a man who drowned Saturday evening in the Fort George Inlet was found Sunday.

JSO said its Air and Marine Units, along with several other agencies, responded to the area around 6 p.m. Saturday after receiving calls of an adult male drowning, but were unable to find the victim.

The following morning, JSO said its dive team found the man dead and is working with the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.

The agency added that there was no foul play and the incident appears to be accidental.

This incident is just one of the many drownings the area has witnessed over the last few weeks.

Just days ago, the Argyle Athletic Association confirmed to News4JAX the identity of a 5-year-old boy who drowned in Clay County.

And earlier this month, a 4-year-old boy drowned in a Baymeadows retention pond, and a teenager drowned on Easter Sunday at Hanna Park.

Joyce Delifus, a lifelong swimmer and co-founder of the Shawn D. Delifus Foundation, a non-profit organization that has helped over a thousand people learn to swim for free, says that with summer coming near and more people heading to the waters, she wants everyone to be safe.

“When you go swimming at the beach, you go in front of a lifeguard and you find out before you leave home what the weather report is,” she said. “If it’s saying it’s not the kind of weather to go to the beach, then you need to do something else.”

She also says if you don’t know how to swim, now is the best time to learn to prevent any potentially fatal situations.
