The St. Johns Country Day girls soccer team barreled into the state championship game for a shot at bringing home another gold medal.
The Spartans pasted the South Florida HEAT 6-0 in the Class 1A state semifinal on Wednesday night at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand to roll into Saturday’s 1 p.m. state championship game against a Pine team that they should cruise by.

St. Johns (19-3-1) has been just that good. It hasn’t allowed a goal to a team in Class 1A this season.
When the FHSAA reclassified and went from six classes to seven this season, the Spartans landed in 1A, the smallest classification. Head coach Mike Pickett always puts together a brutal regular season schedule, and the 1A playoff path this year is by far the lightest part of the year for the Spartans. St. Johns has outscored its four playoff opponents by a combined 25-0 and Saturday’s opponent Pine (16-1-1) figures to be perhaps the most challenging of the postseason path, albeit probably not by that much more.
St. Johns, winners of 14 state championships, the Knights will look to try and at least get on the scoreboard. The Spartans have posted nine straight shutouts and haven’t allowed a goal since a 3-1 loss to Bishop Moore on Dec. 20. The Hornets were the Class 4A state runner-up.
